You may find the Search Engine , the Technology Timeline or the Hall of Fame quicker if you are looking for something or somebody in particular. Scroll down and see what treasures you can discover. Background We think of a battery today as a source of portable power, but it is no exaggeration to say that the battery is one of the most important inventions in the history of mankind. Volta’s pile was at first a technical curiosity but this new electrochemical phenomenon very quickly opened the door to new branches of both physics and chemistry and a myriad of discoveries, inventions and applications. The electronics, computers and communications industries, power engineering and much of the chemical industry of today were founded on discoveries made possible by the battery. Pioneers It is often overlooked that throughout the nineteenth century, most of the electrical experimenters, inventors and engineers who made these advances possible had to make their own batteries before they could start their investigations.

Civilian speed watch working well on Black Isle By David Ross A ground-breaking initiative involving local civilian volunteers in a Highland village reporting speeding cars to the police, seems to be working, with the rate of offending reducing by 90 per cent. Police Scotland and the Ross-shire community of Culbokie’s volunteers are noting a reduction in the number of cars speeding. Eight volunteers work in groups of three wearing high visibility jackets.
They monitor cars that trigger the 30mph sign at the south west end of the village on the Black Isle. They started doing eight hours every fortnight, at peak times. They note down the registration number, speed, date and time of the vehicle clocked over the limit. The data will be collated at the end of the trial period in June. As the weeks go by, the friendlier the drivers become with waves, smiles and very supportive comments.
When the volunteers are there, we’re delighted that there’s a dramatic reduction in speeding. Only in June though will we find out whether our slower driving behaviour has become normal behaviour.

When he was seen throwing punches he was pulled away by staff and stabbed one door steward on the leg with a knife he grabbed from a nearby table. He then headbutted Mr Minaz who took the blade from his hand and he was restrained and lead by bouncers to another area of the building. A door steward Hough was friends with then allowed him to leave the premises through a staff exit.
Hours later police caught up with him at Glasgow Airport in the departure lounge shortly before he was due to fly to Dubai – a flight he booked earlier that morning. After a trial at Glasgow Sheriff Court, Hough – who was jailed for four and a half years for drug dealing – was convicted of assaulting Mr Minaz on May 12, and bursting his nose. He was also found guilty of behaving in a threatening or abusive manner by lashing out at door stewards. At his trial Hough, from Milton, Glasgow, lodged a special defence of self-defence for an alleged assault on door steward Stephen Valente by stabbing him on the leg and was cleared by the jury of that charge.
In evidence he claimed he was the real victim. He told the jury he feared for his life when he was restrained round the neck and lashed out in an attempt to free himself. It was previously reported he threatened to shoot ex Celtic defender Darren O’Dea after accusing him of chatting up his girlfriend in a Glasgow nightclub.
